General Information

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is the fourth entry from Ace Attorney series. Known in Japan as ぎゃくてんさいばん4 (Gyakuten Saiban 4 / lit. Turnabout Trial 4). The previous writer, Shu Takumi, felt he had explored Phoenix's character fully on the previous game, he wanted the new game had new character and don't want Phoenix to make appearance. But the new team decided to make Phoenix as Apollo's mentor and Shu Takumi become the supervisor.

The game first released for Nintendo DS at Japan on 12 April 2007, under the name ぎゃくてんさいばん4 (Gyakuten Saiban 4 / lit. Turnabout Trial 4). North America version released on 19 February 2008, at Europe on 9 May 2008, and at Australia on 22 May 2008. The game ported to iOS for world wide on 1 December 2016, followed by android version on 8 December 2016. Nintendo 3DS released at November 2017 and Japan had Collector's package edition that included mini soundtrack CD.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney set 7 years after Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations. Start with following new protagonist, Apollo Justice, a rookie attorney who work under mysteriously disbarred Phoenix Wright. Alongside with magician Trucy, Phoenix Wright daughter, they tackling cases to find the truth, by investigating crime scene, speak to people involved in the case, and cross-examine the witnesses.


Gameplay

The game split into 2 modes, Trial mode and Investigation mode. And at any time you could access your Court Record, where your Evidence and Profiles are stored with more detailed information.

Trial mode where you defend your client on court trial.

  • Health bar: Your health represented by a green health bar. Depending the risk involved, you'll lose more health on each mistake you made and you could see how much you'll lose by the glowing section on the bar. The health bar will remain the same through the episode and it could be recharge by successfully break Psyche-Lock. Once you lost all your health, your client will be declared 'Guilty' and game over.
  • Cross Examination: Every witness testimony must be examined, either by pressing certain statement to get more information or presenting evidence to contradicting statement. Pressing generally safe from penalty until told otherwise and presenting wrong evidence or presenting at wrong statement will result on getting penalized.

Investigation mode where you looking around various places to gather evidences for next day trial.

  • Examine: This mode allowing you to examine your surrounding (a.k.a background) to gather hint or get new evidence.
  • Talk: Sometimes there's people on the area you're visiting and you could talk to them to get more information. The conversation topic will had red checkmark if you already talked about that topic.
  • Present: Sometimes you need to present evidence to people to get more hint and presenting unrelated evidence won't cost health like in trial mode.
  • Psyche-Locks: Psyche-Locks is Phoenix Wright ability to detect people when they are lying or trying to hide something. Magatama button will appear when trying to attempt break the lock followed by presenting evidence or clues to uncover the truth.

Like Phoenix Wright, Apollo also had his own ability, Perceive. He could sense people tensing up, his bracelet will react to it and bracelet button will appear to confront them. Press the bracelet button and pick up people nervous tic (like sweating, twitching, shrugging, etc.) at the right words. Once found, break their testimony by presenting evidence or clues.

Scientific investigation also back and introduced "Crime Recreation Mode". In this mode a 3D model of the crime scene was presented and player could explore the model to look for clues.
