General Information

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies is the fifth entry from Ace Attorney series. Known in Japan as ぎゃくてんさいばん5 (Gyakuten Saiban 5 / lit. Turnabout Trial 5). As it was the first Ace Attorney game on the Nintendo 3DS, the developers made use of 3D graphics; they focused on preserving the look of the earlier Ace Attorney games' 2D art, and wanted to ensure that the graphics looked better than those in the simultaneously developed Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

The game first released for Nintendo 3DS at Japan on 25 July 2013, under the name ぎゃくてんさいばん5 (Gyakuten Saiban 5 / lit. Turnabout Trial 5) and had limited edition that include a Phoenix Wright figurine, a Nintendo 3DS pouch, and stickers. World wide version for Nintendo 3DS on 24 October 2013 as digital release due to lack of retail support for previous Ace Attorney games. The game ported to iOS at Japan on 7 August 2014 and for world wide on 14 August 2014. Android version released for world wide on 23 May 2017. The two additional episodes, Turnabout Reclaimed and Quiz Turnabout Deduction (remained exclusive to Japan due to its dependency on in-depth knowledge of Japanese culture), were made available as downloadable content shortly after the game's Japanese release.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, set a year after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. This time you following 3 defense attorney; Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes. Three of them will defend their client; by investigating crime scene, speak to people involved in the case, and cross-examine the witnesses; while trying to restore the justice system from the dark age of the law.


Gameplay

The game split into 2 modes, Trial mode and Investigation mode. And at any time you could access your Court Record, where your Evidence and Profiles are stored with more detailed information.

Start from the episode 2, Notes feature introduced. It located in side Court record and act as to-do list during investigation mode.

Trial mode where you defend your client on court trial.

  • Health bar: Your health represented by a green health bar. Depending the risk involved, you'll lose more health on each mistake you made and you could see how much you'll lose by the glowing section on the bar. The health bar will remain the same through the episode and it could be recharge by successfully break Psyche-Lock. Once you lost all your health, your client will be declared 'Guilty' and game over.
  • Cross Examination: Every witness testimony must be examined, either by pressing certain statement to get more information or presenting evidence to contradicting statement. Pressing generally safe from penalty until told otherwise and presenting wrong evidence or presenting at wrong statement will result on getting penalized.

Investigation mode where you looking around various places to gather evidences for next day trial.

  • Examine: This mode allowing you to examine your surrounding (a.k.a background) to gather hint or get new evidence.
  • Talk: Sometimes there's people on the area you're visiting and you could talk to them to get more information. The conversation topic will had red checkmark if you already talked about that topic.
  • Present: Sometimes you need to present evidence to people to get more hint and presenting unrelated evidence won't cost health like in trial mode.

Each protagonist have their own abilities to aid their job.

  • Psyche-Locks: Psyche-Locks is Phoenix Wright ability to detect people when they are lying or trying to hide something. Magatama button will appear when trying to attempt break the lock followed by presenting evidence or clues to uncover the truth.
  • Perceive: Perceive is Apollo Justice ability to sense when people tensing up and his bracelet will react to it. Bracelet button will appear when trying to pick up people nervous tic (like sweating, twitching, shrugging, etc.) at the right words and once found, break their testimony by presenting evidence or clues.
  • Mood Matrix: Mood Matrix is Athena Cykes ability, she have sensitive hearing that enabled her to pick up subtle emotional cues in people voices. With the help of her computer, Widget, she able to examine the cues through holographic interface. On each corner there are four mood marker representing happiness, anger, sadness and surprise. On either unexpected emotion appearing or decreasing/increasing expected emotion press 'Pinpoint' to get the witness changed their testimony. Sometimes the witness has emotional overload, making it difficult to pick up another emotion. Find the overload source and press 'Probe' to point it out to the witness to calm down.
